SURIN, Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Surin office invites tourists to join the annual elephant festival, 8 to 19 November 2013, at Si Narong Stadium and the Surin Elephant Show held in the centre of the provincial town.
TAT’s Surin office says the event will honour HM the King and Queen for their work in conserving local traditions in the province. The festival will feature both traditional and fun activities.
Surin Elephant Round Up, one of the country’s oldest festivals revived by the Tourism Authority of Thailand in the 1960s. The government agency, which was known as the Tourist Organisation of Thailand at the time, established an overnight rail trip to Surin that included VIP seats for the elephant round-up. The entire train’s sleeping compartments were sold inclusive of tickets to the show to European tourists.
The festival is usually celebrated in the third week of November.
Surin is a major town in the lower-Isan region of Northeast Thailand and has long been linked with elephants and often referred to as the “Province of Elephants”.
