Ekkamai's 60-year-old beef noodles specialist Wattana Panich (336 Ekkamai Soi 18, 02-391-7264. Open daily 10am-8pm) still uses the same soup at when it moved to its current premises 40 years ago.

The B100 bowls are made from an old family recipe and attract all walks of Bangkok life, from Sukhumvit socialites to taxi drivers and tourists.

Watch our video to find out the secret to this old-school beef stew:

Thai Beef Noodles at Wattana Panich, Ekkamai วัฒนาพานิช-ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเนื้อ skaal

A few years ago I made a video about Thai beef noodles, at a little restaurant in the Udom Suk area of Bangkok. The beef noodles there were extremely good, but someone commented saying I needed to try the beef noodles on Ekkamai Soi 18. I put it on my list, but just didn’t have the time to go there for a long time. But finally, after a long wait, I finally made my way to the famous Wattana Panich วัฒนาพานิช-ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเนื้อ restaurant to taste the beef noodles - and I was excited.

nu vil de lukke det hele på den halveShock tid

For decades the noisy bustle of street vendors has filled the streets of Bangkok, but this could soon become a thing of the past. In a bid to “clean up” the city, the authorities have already cleared away thousands of vendors; at the same time a major riverfront development will see whole communities evicted.

In one small community on the Chao Phraya River, local families are preparing for the day they’ll be moved away, to be replaced by a concrete promenade. “It’s like they want to wipe out the poor,” one woman says.
