A group of Buddhist monks led by Phra Methi Thammacharn, secretary-general of Buddhism Protection Centre of Thailand rallied at Buddha Monthon in Nakhon Pathom Monday morning reportedly to pre-empt attempts to overthrow the Sangha Supreme Council.

The demonstrating monks claimed to represent networks of Buddhist monks throughout the country, including the Buddhism Protection Centre of Thailand and the Association of Buddhism Scholars.

Army troops were dispatched to the scene to keep order and participants were told not to bring their vehicles into Buddha Monthon but to walk instead.

Dhammakaya monks break through military barricade



A 15-minute tussle broke out when Dhammakaya monks broke through the military line into the compound of the National Office of Buddhism Monday at the Buddha Monthon park afternoon.

Some 50 troops failed to prevent the monks and laymen followers from breaking their line into the compound.

During the tussle, a monk was seen head-locking a troop and pulling him out of the way.

The monks wanted to rally inside the compound of the National Office of Buddhism to demand the office to speed up the process of the appointment of the new supreme patriarch. The monks accused the office of dragging its feet over the appointment.
