Danish citizen Mr. Per Pinning was on Monday 4 July arrested in Nongkhai for having overstayed his visa to Thailand. The 40 year old Dane had arrived Thailand last time on 4 December 2010 and was permitted to stay until 1 February 2010. Since then he had been on an illegal overstay.
Mr. Per Pinning appeared in court on Thursday 6 July where he was sentenced to be deported once he had paid his fine. As he was not able to pay, he was detained instead.
Eventually, a fellow inmate from South African whose housekeeper paid his fine arranged for the fine of Mr. Per Pinning to be paid as well. Then on 12 July he was transferred to the Immigration Police detention at the checkpoint in Nongkhai from where he was sent over the border.
Mr Per Pinning had not been ordered blacklisted by the judge, so the Dane was able to make a u-turn after having entered Laos. He returned to Thailand the same evening where he was given the standard a 15 days visa on arrival at a land border.
The Dane is known among local Danish residents in Nongkhai as a person who frequently gets into trouble. He should reportedly once have been accused of theft and has frequently lost his temper.
